TOOL: A Look Back at the Progressive Metal Band's Storied History

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic progressive metal bands of all time, TOOL has crafted a unique, heavy, and thought-provoking sound that has influenced bands from around the globe. With their fascinating stories, cryptic videos, and incomparable live performances, they have captivated fans since their origin. Let's take a look back at the history of the band and its members, their signature sound, and the songs that put them on the map.

Origins and Formation

TOOL had its start in 1990 with vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, and drummer Danny Carey, all three of them long-time friends. They formed a band called Toolshed, eventually dropping the "d" to form the familiar TOOL name. Bassist Paul D'Amour later completed their sonic-quartet, and their debut album, "Undertow" was released in 1993 to critical acclaim and, most importantly, fan applause.

Early Recordings and Tours

TOOL's signature, unpredictable sound quickly spread across the globe, and the band wasted no time in taking their music on tour and playing shows all over the world. In 1996, they released "Ænima", an album that became their bestselling to date and full of classic tracks like "Stinkfist" and "Forty-Six & 2". Both the record and their relentless touring schedule catapulted them to a new level of fame and worldwide recognition.

Fear Inoculum and New Chapters

TOOL's third release - 2001's "Lateralus" - became an even greater success and has been credited with having changed the landscape of progressive metal. With the addition of two new tracks, "Vicarious" and "The Pot", it delivered a complete soundscape to their fans. Fast-forward to 2019 and their fourth album, "Fear Inoculum", became their first No. 1 on the Billboard charts, a testament to the powerful longevity of their fanbase.

Style and Sound

Unlike many other groups of the time, TOOL incorporated complex and often lengthy songs that combined traditional and nontraditional elements, represented in lyrically intricate and often dense titles. Their riffs and syncopated rhythms melded sublimely with Keenan’s vibrato-filled vocals - a sound and style that is influential to many modern metal bands.

Legacy

TOOL's legacy is one of innovation, scope, and sound exploration. With densely layered arrangements, varying time signatures, and cleverly-crafted lyrics, they have not only achieved success in their own right, but also inspired many other musician’s performances and musical careers. Their music continues to be consumed and unearthed by new generations of fans, ensuring that their star will continue to shine for many years to come.
