Introduction to the Doobie Brothers

The Doobie Brothers are a classic rock band, first formed in San Jose, California in 1969. Fusing rock, blues, and country music, their style set them apart from other bands of the era. This band composed of five members: Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons, John Hartman, Tiran Porter, and Micheal Hossack, released a string of hits throughout the 1970s that resonated with both fans and fellow musicians alike.

The Beginnings of the Doobie Brothers

The Doobie Brothers began as a musical collaboration between Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons. They met in 1969 at a local San Jose club and quickly formed a mutual respect for one another’s musical abilities.

Johnston and Simmons were joined by John Hartman on drums, Tiran Porter on bass, and Micheal Hossack on percussion. With their lineup set, the band began playing local gigs and quickly developed a devoted following in the San Francisco area.

Rise to Fame

Their self-titled debut album, released in 1971, found success due to their single “Listen to the Music” which became an instant hit.

In the following years, the Doobie Brothers released several albums filled with chart-topping singles, such as “China Grove”, “Takin’ It To The Streets”, “Long Train Running” and “Jesus Is Just Alright With Me”. The band also achieved mainstream success with their cover of the hit single “Black Water” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975.

Band Members

The band has been through various lineup changes over the years. In 1975, Johnston and Hartman left the group and were replaced by band members including Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter and Keith Knudsen.

In 1978, the Doobie Brothers released the album Minute by Minute, which produced the hit single “What a Fool Believes”. The band went on to experience great success with their following albums and tours until they ultimately disbanded in 1982.

Reunions

In 1987, the original lineup reunited to tour and released another album Cycles. In the 1990s, the band released two more albums Sibling Rivalry and Farewell Tour and embarked on several world tours.

In the 2000s, the band continued to tour extensively and released their most recent album World Gone Crazy in 2010.
