Spinvis is a Dutch alternative rock and dream pop band from Rotterdam. Along with other post-2000 bands such as Kane and Krezip, Spinvis laid the groundwork for the world-renowned Dutch indie music scene. Founded in 2001, the band’s unique sound attracted a devoted fan base and earned the band a well-deserved place in the spotlight.
Spinvis was created when bassist Joep van Gaansen, visual artist TJ Niemandsverdriet and drummer Jeroen Kleijn met in Rotterdam's Vroom & Dreesmann department store and decided to form a band. They later invited lead singer and guitar player Erik de Jong (aka Spinvis) to join the band. After releasing their debut EP in 2001, the band went on to produce three studio albums. Their 2003 self-titled debut album was hailed by critics and fans alike and earned them a 2006 Edison Award.
Fans of Spinvis’ unique blend of alternative rock and dream pop may also enjoy the music of other well-known Dutch bands like Bløf, De Staat, and Krezip. These artists share the same dreamy guitar riffs and ethereal electronic soundscapes as those found in Spinvis’s music.
The original Spinvis lineup consisted of founder members Joep van Gaansen (bass), TJ Niemandsverdriet (visuals) and Jeroen Kleijn (drums), as well as Erik de Jong (aka Spinvis, vocals/guitar). In 2006, the band reunited to release their second album, Klaar.
In 2018, Erik de Jong rejoined the Spins to work on the band’s third album, Teenage & Paradise.
Spinvis’ music continues to be a staple of the Dutch indie music scene. Some of the band’s most popular songs include “Dagen van Gras, Dagen van Stro” and “Dagplaatje”, as well as their 2005 single “Kom Uit de Bedstee.”
