The band began in 2004, when bassist and producer Michael League started college at the University of North Texas. By combining some of the members of his fellow jazz band mates with some of the younger and more modern members of the local music scene, League created Snarky Puppy.

The band made their breakthrough on the live music scene when they released their debut album The World is Going Up in 2007. The record contained a mix of original material and covers of classic jazz pieces, and it immediately caught the attention of the jazz world.

Snarky Puppy's next two albums Bring Us the Bright and Tell Your Friends further solidified their reputation for intricate and adventurous playing, demonstrating their ability to take diverse genres and styles and create something entirely new and individual.

The core of the band has remained the same since it's inception. Michael League, the bandleader and bass player, is joined by other key members Chris Bullock (saxophone, flute and keys), Bob Kinkel (keyboards), Bill Laurance (keys) and Shaun Martin (keyboard, trombone and production).

Over the years, the band has seen a number of additional members come and go, with members of the "Snarky Brotherhood" coming and going with shows and festivals. By 2021, the band boasted a regular line-up of over one hundred musicians, hailing from all parts of the world.
