Who is Shygirl?

Shygirl is a London-based English female artist, producer and rapper. They burst onto the scene with their debut EP in 2018, and since then they've been acclaimed as one of the best new acts in the genre.

Well-known for their unique style and forward-thinking sound, Shygirl has been praised by critics, gaining attention from publications such as Paper Magazine, The FADER and Pitchfork.

Origins and Early Life

Originating from South London, Shygirl began performing under the name of “Shy One”. They gained early recognition for their aggressive, high-energy performances and their far-reaching influence in various circles.

Although much is not known about their early career, Shygirl has said that their beginnings never seemed to register with mainstream media and that their musical identity was forged in the underground.

Historical Events

Shygirl made waves with the released of their debut single “Glide” in February of 2018. The track was released through XL Recordings and was met with critical acclaim. Within days, the music video was awarded the honor of being labeled a “must-watch” by numerous publications including NOW, Spin, and Rolling Stone.

The same year, Shygirl released their acclaimed EP titled “Alias”, which included the lead single “Glide” and two additional tracks “Harder" and “Hellbent”. The single “Glide” exploded onto the internet, making it to the top of numerous charts, including the UK Indie Breakers Chart, where it stayed for over 6 weeks.

The success of their debut EP awarded them a nomination for the 2019 “ Breakthrough Music Awards,” where Shygirl was compared to some of the greats of the electronic music genre, including Bjork, Aphex Twin and M.I.A.

Band History & Member Chronology

The group formed in 2017 when Shygirl joined forces with fellow London-based producer Sian Cross. As the duo began to gain increased attention, Shygirl released their first EP titled “Alias” in 2018, with remixes produced by SOPHIE and Jlin.

In 2020, collaboration with the likes of Bjarki, Murlo, and House of Pharaohs saw Shygirl continue to garner recognition, eventually leading to their first full length album “ALIAS” released by French label Naufrages.

Singles and Famous Tracks

Entering the spotlight with the single “Glide” off of the 2018 EP “Alias”, other standout tracks include “BB”, “Tasty”, and “GUY”. Since the release of “ALIAS”, Shygirl has kept the momentum going with her 2021 release “Slime” and its accompanying singles “Barnacles” and “Bisto”, which have already achieved recognition and praise from several prominent outlets.
