Shinedown is an alternative-rock band hailing from Jacksonville, Florida. Becoming a household name with their contagious blend of hard-hitting rock, melodic sing-along choruses, and meaningful lyrics, Shinedown has risen to the top of the modern rock music scene throughout their two-decade long career.
Formed in 2001, Brent Smith, Barry Kerch, and Jasin Todd started the band with a desire to break the music industry mold. Smith explained in an interview that despite the popular pressure on rock bands to remain “angsty,” the band chose to stay on the opposite side of the spectrum and put out anthemic, uplifting rock.
In 2003, Shinedown released their debut album, Leave a Whisper, featuring the hit singles “45” and “Simple Man.” The album reached number five on the US Billboard 200 and was the groups’ first of many successes. After receiving consistent airplay on alternative stations and gaining a greatly devoted fanbase, Shinedown released their second album, Us and Them, in 2005. After a few tracks on the album achieved major mainstream success, the group gained worldwide fame.
The next seven years saw Shinedown continuing to push boundaries in the alternative rock world; they achieved four number one singles on Mainstream Rock Tracks, released The Sound of Madness in 2008, and eventually produced the Billboard Hot 100 hit “Second Chance.” Following the success of their third album, Shinedown followed up with their fourth and fifth studio albums, Amaryllis in 2012 and Threat to Survival in 2015, both of which followed similar successes of their previous works and were a solid testament to the band’s longevity and staying power.
The current lineup of Shinedown features Brent Smith on vocals, Barry Kerch on drums, Zach Myers on guitar, Eric Bass on bass, and Arron Gillespie on lead guitar and backing vocals. All five members actively participate in the songwriting process to come together to create their unique blend of anthemic and uplifting rock.
If you find yourself captivated by Shinedown’s catchy mix of sing-along choruses and meaningful songwriting, similar artists you may enjoy include Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Seether, and Bush.
