Voisine was born on March 26, 1963 in the small town of Edmundston in New Brunswick, Canada, to a French Canadian father and a Mi’kmaq First Nations mother. He began to sing at an early age, often accompanying his father, who played the harmonica in a local band. By age 13, Voisine had already performed in various festivals and competitions, eventually winning the provincial Canadian music awards by 14.
