Red Hot Chili Peppers: A Brief History

The Red Hot Chili Peppers began as a punk, funk, rap and alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, in the early 1980s. The band is one of the best-selling and most influential acts in the history of contemporary alternative rock.

Origins

The band was originally formed in 1983 by vocalist Anthony Kiedis and guitarist Hillel Slovak, who were joined by drummer Jack Irons, and bassist Flea for their eponymous debut album in 1984. While the band's signature sound was developed in the late 1980s, it was the 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik that catapulted the Chili Peppers to international fame.

Band History

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have gone through various changes and different lineups over the years. Following the death of Jack Irons and the departure of Hillel Slovak in 1988, the band enlisted Chad Smith and John Frusciante to finish the recording of their fourth album, Mother's Milk in 1989. Frusciante remained with the group until his departure in 1992, which prompted the return of Dave Navarro. Following another name change, the band released Californication in 1999, their seventh studio album and the last before their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Members Chronology

The original line-up in 1983 included Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons and Flea. After Slovak’s death in 1988, Chad Smith joined for the recording of Mother's Milk and John Frusciante replaced Navarro on Californication in 1998. Frusciante left the band again in 2009, and was replaced by Josh Klinghoffer. Chad Smith has been a constant throughout the band's history.
