Who Are New Model Army?

New Model Army is an English post-punk band formed in Bradford, West Yorkshire in 1980. The band has experienced numerous line-up changes over the years and the only constant member is vocalist/guitarist Justin Sullivan. Over the years the band has developed a unique sound that incorporates elements of punk, rock, folk and electronic music.

New Model Army's History

New Model Army first came together in 1980, drawing on the punk energy of bands such as The Clash and The Sex Pistols. They combined their punk roots with a melodic, stirring sound and lyrics that highlighted social injustice and political themes. They quickly gained a fervent following, which was boosted further when they were chosen to support The Who on their 1982 French tour.

The band released a number of albums throughout the 1980s, including their debut album “No Rest for the Wicked”, “The Ghost of Cain”, and “Thunder and Consolation”. While the harDCore punk sound had always been present in their early releases, the band began to explore a more melodic, folk-infused side.

In the early 90s, the band underwent a line-up change and began to experiment with more electronic music on their albums. This led to their critically acclaimed album “Impurity”, and the single “Renaissance”, which propelled the band to greater fame. The band went on to release a number of albums throughout the early 2000s, and are still recording music today.

The band has seen numerous members revolving in and out of the band throughout their years but the only consistent constant has been the vocalist, guitarist,and songwriter Justin Sullivan. Some other notable members include Robert Heaton (drums 1980-1984 and 1989-1992), Marshall Gill (guitar 1985-1987), Adrian Portas (guitar 2006-2014), Ceri Monger (bass 1997-2012) and Dean White (keyboard/synthesiser 2012-present).
