Meshuggah is a trailblazing Swedish extreme metal band that first formed in 1987. Over three decades later, the band is known for its prolific polymeter beats and immense soundscapes, often credited with developing the djent guitar technique.
Meshuggah was formed in the Swedish city of Umeå by vocalist and guitarist Jens Kidman, alongside bass guitarist Peter Nordin, lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal and drummer Niklas Lundgren. In 1989 they released their self-titled debut album, which earned them a strong underground following. This was followed in 1992 by the lauded ‘Contradictions Collapse,’ and ‘Destroy Erase Improve’ in 1995, which showcased the band’s progressive metal sound.
Meshuggah achieved more mainstream success with the release of their 2002 album ‘Nothing.’ One of their most successful albums, it saw them experimenting with a variety of genre styles along with their signature sound. 2004's ‘Catch 33’ featured another seismic shift, with intense rhythmic patterns and profound textures.
In 2008, Meshuggah released the album ‘obZen’, which rocketed them to greater heights of success and earned them a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Metal Performance’ for their single ‘Bleed.’ Several of the band’s releases since then - ‘Koloss’ (2012) and ‘The Violent Sleep of Reason’ (2016) - have won them further critical acclaim.
