Born in 1958 in Philadelphia, Mississippi, Stuart first gained notoriety in the early 70s as the lead singer and mandolin player for the seminal bluegrass group, The Sullivans. After the band dissolved in 1975, Stuart took a job as lead guitarist for fellow country singer, Johnny Cash.
As a member of the emerging "outlaw country" scene of the late 70s and early 80s, Marty continued to gain attention when he released his first studio album entitled "Busy Bee Café" in 1982. This was followed by two more studio albums, "Past, Present and Future" and "The Pilgrim", and two more live albums, on which Stuart made use of his impressive instrumental and vocal talents.
It wasn’t until the release of his fourth studio album, "Hillbilly Rock" in 1989 that Marty finally began to find his place in the country music scene. The album's title track quickly rose to the top of the Billboard Country Singles chart and "Tempted" spent a month at number two.
In the early 1990s, Stuart released further material in the form of a number of greatest hits compilations and live albums and enjoyed a degree of commercial success allowing him to tour extensively throughout the US.
