Florence + The Machine have become increasingly popular in the indie and soul music genres since they were founded in 2007. Best known for their Grammy Award-winning single "Dog Days Are Over," this British rock band has been described as having a unique sound and a hypnotic energy.
Florence + The Machine was created and founded by lead vocalist Florence Welch and studio producer Tom (Isom) Watson and signed to Island Records. The band was officially formed in 2008 in South London, England, after Welch and Watson met in a bar after a friend suggested they should collaborate. Inspired by Welch's sensibilities and flair for dramatic melodies, Watson filled out the sound by adding his arrangements. As the duo began to gain a following, they formed a group to join them for live performances, and signed a recording deal soon after.
Since its formation in 2008, Florence + The Machine has always been a passionate ensemble of talented musicians. From the start, the group was made up of Florence Welch, Isom Innis, Robert Ackroyd and Chris Hayden (drums). Since then, the band has evolved to include many other members such as Christopher Lloyd Hayden (drums), Isabella Summers (keyboard) and Jim Irvin (backing vocals), among others.
Since their formation, Florence + The Machine has released a total of four studio albums with number five on the way. In 2008 they released their debut album “Lungs” with the first single "Kiss with a Fist," followed by their second album, “Ceremonials,” in 2011. This was the band’s breakthrough album, with tracks like “Never Let Me Go,” “No Light, No Light,” and “What the Water Gave Me” that propelled them to success and international fame. In 2012 they released an EP called “Between Two Lungs,” and their third album, “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful,” followed in 2015. They released their latest album, “High As Hope,” in 2018.
Similar to the sound of Florence + The Machine are bands like The National, Arcade Fire, Lykke Li and The xx. Florence + The Machine’s most popular songs include “Dog Days Are Over,” “What the Water Gave Me,” “Ship to Wreck,” “Spectrum” and “Shake It Out.”
The group has been nominated for numerous awards, including two Grammy’s in the Best Pop Vocal Album category for “Ceremonials” in 2015 and “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” in 2016. They also won the Best British Breakthrough of 2009 at the 2009 Brit Awards in London.
Florence + The Machine’s combination of indie and soul music have resonated with people from all walks of life, creating a massive international fan-base. With four albums and an EP released to date, Florence + The Machine has become a well-known name in the indie music scene.
