Dream Theater: A Brief History of an Iconic Prog Metal Band

The prog metal band Dream Theater came onto the music scene in 1985, and has since become one of the most influential progressive rock bands of all time. Formed by guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung, the band has taken their name from a California-based theater collective. Since then, they have experienced immense success, taking their unique sound to the masses with their reputation as a live powerhouse firmly intact.

Origin of Dream Theater

The dreamy sounds of Dream Theater began when founding members John Petrucci and John Myung met at the Berklee College of Music. In 1985, the two were playing in the Berklee-based band Majesty by day and working on new music together at night. Joining forces with keyboard player Kevin Moore, drummer Mike Portnoy, and vocalist Charlie Dominici, Dream Theater was born.

Band History

The band's current lineup is comprised of John Petrucci (guitars), John Myung (bass), James LaBrie (vocals), Jordan Rudess (keyboards), and Mike Mangini (drums).

In 1989, Dream Theater released their debut album, When Dream and Day Unite. The album is considered the band's first official release and features a collection of the more progressive and experimental material they had been creating during the previous four years.

Dream Theater's next album, Images & Words, was to be the first real glimpse of the progressive metal band's true prowess. Boasting the hit single "Pull Me Under," the album catapulted the band into mainstream popularity.

In 1994, Dream Theater released Awake, their third studio album. The album featured some of the band's most progressive compositions including the 16-minute epic "A Change of Seasons."

Other notable releases from Dream Theater include the studio albums Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999), Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002), Train Of Thought (2003), and Systematic Chaos (2007).
