Death Cab for Cutie

Death Cab for Cutie is an indie rock band based in Seattle, Washington. Formed in 1997, the band is composed of Ben Gibbard (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Nick Harmer (bass), and Jason McGerr (drums). The band achieved mainstream success in 2005 with the release of their major label album 'Plans', which spawned the Grammy-nominated chart-topping single 'Soul Meets Body'. Death Cab for Cutie has released nine studio albums and four EPs to date, with several singles that have also gained popularity.

Origins and Band History

Death Cab for Cutie was formed in 1997 by Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla in Bellingham, Washington. The two musicians had been friends since high school and shared a common interest in indie and underground rock music, as well as a desire to create their own sound. The band's name is derived from a song by the British group The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.

The original lineup consisted of Gibbard (vocals, guitar), Walla (guitar, keyboards, production), Nick Harmer (bass), and Nathan Good (drums). Death Cab for Cutie recorded their first album, the 'You Can Play These Songs With Chords' EP, at Walla's home studio in 1998. The band gained a following in the Seattle area with their second album 'Something About Airplanes' in 1998 and led to an independent record label deal with Barsuk Records.

Members Chronology

The band has seen several lineup changes over the years. Nathan Good left the band after their second album, and was replaced by Michael Schorr, who left in 2001. Schorr was replaced by financial analyst Kyle Gass in 2002. Bassist Nick Harmer is the only original member of the band who still plays in the current lineup. Chris Walla left the band in 2014 and is now working as a solo producer.
