David Rodigan: The Legendary Reggae & Dancehall Artist

David Rodigan is one of the most respected and influential Reggae & Dancehall artists in the world. His pioneering sound encompasses a broad range of styles and genres, from classic Ska to new-style Dub. He is best known for his pivotal role in popularizing reggae throughout the United Kingdom and Europe in the 1980s.

History

David Rodigan was born in London, England in 1958. From an early age, he had an interest in music and quickly fell in love with the sounds of Reggae and Dancehall. In 1975 he began promoting and playing records for his own pirate radio station, creating a unique blend of reggae, ska, dub and dancehall that resonated with passionate followers.

It was through pirate radio that Rodigan established his reputation as a Reggae & Dancehall champion. He soon expanded his repertoire to include DJ’ing at parties and raves, regularly playing alongside some of the most influential names of the genre such as the the legendary King Jammys, Duke Vin, Tippa Irie, Mad Professor and many more.

In 1981, Rodigan was invited to join Kiss FM as one of the station’s original DJs. This move helped to cement his position as a club, radio and recording artist. Rodigan went on to win the prestigious MOBO Award for Best Reggae DJ in 2003 and again in 2005.

It has served as a major catalyst for the genre’s increased popularity in Europe and the UK.
