Andre Rieu is a legendary Dutch violinist, widely considered to be one of the pioneers of the waltz revival. He started his career as a classical violinist in 1980 and has since become an internationally acclaimed conductor and entertainer as the leader of the Johann Strauss Orchestra.
Rieu has traveled the world leading his orchestra on successful tours year after year, consistently selling out venues and releasing high quality repertoire. His orchestra was formed in the late 1980s, aiming to perform late 19th and early 20th century classical music. Over the years, he has released over 50 different DVDs and CDs that highlight his classic Viennese style,featuring classic pieces from the Strauss family, Johann Strauss I, II, and III, as well as from the classical Greats, including Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms.
Rieu is known as the king of the waltz and is at the helm of the Johann Strauss Orchestra. Other members of the orchestra have changed over time but some stayed in the orchestra since its formation, including flautist and saxophonist Florian Klinger, violist Razvan Stoica, and percussionist Marc Jeanisse. As of 2021, the orchestra has over 44 musicians on tour, with 18-20 musicians on stage in each performance.
Rieu's music style is distinctive, featuring a unique combination of classical waltzes, polkas and popular music. Other musicians with a similar style are the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Costa Rica, the Imperial Vienna Orchestra, and The Strauss Symphony of America.
Rieu has released a large repertoire of music, ranging from classic waltzes and polkas to movie soundtracks and contemporary popular music. Some of his most famous songs include “The Blue Danube”, “Emperor Waltz” and “Roses from the South”. He is also well-known for his interpretation of “The Second Waltz”, composed by Dmitri Shostakovich, and “Radetsky March”, composed by Johann Strauss I.
